Flies indoors
One of the most common pests we have indoors are flies. Especially during the warm months of the year, many of us are annoyed by fruit flies in the kitchen that don't seem to disappear no matter what we do to combat them. These small flying insects can be unpleasant intruders in our homes, but fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to get rid of flies. So how can we actually eliminate them? Below, we share our best and most useful tips on how to get rid of flies indoors.
Keep it clean and tidy at home
One of the most effective tricks to get rid of flies and fruit flies indoors is to keep your home clean. This doesn't mean it has to be spotlessly clean all the time, but it's important not to leave dirty dishes out or wait too long to clean up spills. Taking out the trash as often as possible also helps keep flies away.
What do flies eat?
The answer is that they eat almost anything. Fruit flies and other types of flies are not very picky and they happily feast on old food scraps. Even a very small amount of food can attract a swarm of fruit flies in the kitchen. Something as little as a splash of spilled juice on the floor can easily attract flies during warm days.
Things to keep in mind to maintain a clean home:
- Don't leave food and food scraps out.
- Wipe down kitchen countertops and sink often to remove crumbs or food spills.
- Vacuum and wet mop regularly to keep the floors clean.
- During the warmest months of the year, it's a good idea to discard fruit in a separate container with a lid.
- Store fruit in the refrigerator instead of leaving it in a fruit bowl on the kitchen countertop.
- Empty the trash regularly.
- Clean up dead flies to prevent them from attracting other types of pests.
Insect screens, flypaper, or a fruit fly trap?
Ideally, the best approach is to prevent flies from entering your home in the first place. Once they're inside, they are likely to stick around. Flies are attracted to both light and warmth, which is why they often make their way in through our open doors and windows during dusk.
To avoid letting flies indoors, you can install insect screens on doors leading to the balcony or patio, as well as on windows that you typically leave open. Insect screens are highly effective in keeping fruit flies and other flies out while allowing you to continue enjoying fresh air.
For the flies that still manage to find their way in, you can set up flypaper indoors, which is often effective in capturing flies. You can also try using a fruit fly trap, specifically designed to minimize fruit flies in the kitchen.
Get rid of flies indoors - household tips
Flies are attracted to sweet and acidic substances. By combining a few common items found in our pantry, you can easily catch flies indoors. Try mixing two parts vinegar, such as apple cider vinegar, with one part honey or syrup, and finally, add a drop of dish soap. Gently mix the ingredients in a small bowl and place it on the kitchen countertop or wherever you have fly problems indoors.
This mixture will attract and capture everything from fruit flies to house flies indoors.
