Step by step how to wash your fabric sofa

In the case of fabric sofas, you must first check whether it is water resistant. Some materials require dry cleaning and can be ruined if you use water on them. Should you get a single spot that is wet, for example pee on the sofa from children or animals, you can clean the sofa with bicarbonate. Just sprinkle on baking soda and let it dry. When it's dry, you can simply vacuum up the bicarbonate and the stain is gone.

For larger cleaning, follow the steps below:

1. To clean the sofa, always start by vacuuming it clean. Use a furniture nozzle to get into the crevices of armrests and the like.
2. If you have animals, the best tip to remove cat hair from sofa or remove dog hair from sofa is to use a clothes roller. It is also gentle on the sofa fabric.
3. When the sofa is clean of crumbs and hair, it is time to pre-treat more difficult stains on the sofa. A good tip is to use vinegar. Dilute 1 part vinegar with 10 parts water. Brush or dab on the vinegar gently. Let it work. If you don't have vinegar at home, you can use liquid detergent diluted with water.
4. Now it's time to wash the sofa. You can use bile soap on the sofa, soap or other eco-labelled detergent. It is important not to use too much water on upholstered furniture.
5. Let the sofa dry overnight, preferably with a window open for better air circulation.

If your sofa has removable covers that are machine washable, just follow the washing instructions. However, you should not tumble dry sofa covers but air dry them. The covers otherwise risk shrinking.
