The water you brew your coffee with contains lime, which is usually seen as the biggest enemy of your coffee machine. Lime forms deposits of dirt, which affects the taste and quality of your coffee. It is therefore very important that you descale your coffee machine at regular intervals. Before starting any of the steps, be sure to check if the manufacturer of your brewer advises against using any of the ingredients we suggest in the guide below.

Clean and descale coffee maker with vinegar

Using vinegar is one of the most classic housewife tricks available. It is a good, fast and flexible alternative for descaling and cleaning your brewer.

For that you need:

• 6 dl Water
• 1 dl Vinegar (3, 6 or 12%)

Instructions:

1. Start by mixing the solution directly in the coffee maker, a suitable mixture is about one deciliter of vinegar (12%) and six deciliters of water.
2. When the mixture is ready, start the brewer.
3. Brew half the jug and then turn off the brewer for ten to twelve minutes.
4. Switch on the brewer again and let the brew finish.
5. When the machine has finished brewing, wash the jug and rinse with plenty of water.
6. Brew four to five jugs of water to remove taste and odor.
7. When these steps are complete and you no longer feel any vinegar taste or smell, you can enjoy a cup of coffee without dirt and lime.

Good to know when descaling with vinegar:

• If you use 3 or 6% vinegar, you must adjust the recipe accordingly. That is the concentration we are looking for.
• Avoid mixing too strong a mixture of vinegar and water. There is a risk that you may brew more jugs to get rid of the smell and taste.

Clean and descale coffee maker with citric acid

Some coffee maker manufacturers advise against the use of vinegar in connection with cleaning. Should the use of vinegar be discouraged, citric acid is a good alternative.

For that you need:

• 3 teaspoons citric acid
• 6 dl Water

Instructions:

1. Start by mixing a solution directly in the coffee maker, three teaspoons of citric acid together with six decilitres of water is usually good.
2. Make sure you stir the container well before pouring the mixture into it.
3. Start the brewer and let it brew half the jug. Then let the mixture rest for about ten minutes before starting the brewer again.
4. Wait for the entire container to be ready to be brewed and then wash thoroughly.
5. Brew four to five jugs of water afterwards to get rid of the taste and smell.

Good to know:

• The process is the same as when you clean with vinegar, but the citric acid is more gentle on the machine. It also gives a more pleasant scent, which many prefer.
• By cleaning a coffee maker with citric acid, you get a fresh coffee maker quickly and easily.

Clean and descale coffee maker with bicarbonate and clean coffee maker with baking soda

For those of you who feel that you need to clean your machine a little extra, this last solution is for you. A mixture of lemon and bicarbonate allows you to clean the machine more thoroughly, which can be good to do a little now and then.

For this you need:

• 1 Lemon
• 1 dl Bicarbonate
• 6 dl Water

1. Start by mixing a solution of about four teaspoons of bicarbonate together with five to six decilitres of water directly in the coffee pot or in a bowl.
2. When the mixture is ready, pour it into the brewer and start it.
3. Brew the entire jug immediately.
4. Repeat previous steps two to three times.
5. Then brew one last time with water and the juice of a lemon.

When the machine has finished brewing, wash the jug and brew two batches of water only.

Good to know:

• When you brew the last jug, it is important that you make sure that you do not get any kernels or pieces of juice from the lemon as it can damage the brewer.
• Cleaning coffee makers with bicarbonate cleans the entire brewer in a simple way.
• This method also works with baking soda, you do in the same way only that you replace bicarbonate with baking soda. It does not give the same thorough cleaning as with bicarbonate but works and cleans a little deeper than with vinegar or citric acid.
